This is an interpretive programme offering an excellent opportunity to watch birds, butterflies, and other wildlife. This is a must things to do in Thekkady. Different nature trails traversing diverse habitats form the trekking routes, generally 4 to 5 km in length. The trails often pass through evergreen and moist deciduous forests interspersed with marshy grasslands.  The Nature walk is the right programme to feel nature, hear her whispers and smell her flowers

A three hour night trekking that starts from two points, the Entrance Gate of the Periyar Tiger Reserve and from the Bamboo Grooves which intends the guest a feeling of wilderness during night accompanied by an Armed Forest Guard and two Guides.

The Timing of this trek is 7 pm, 10 pm, 1 am in which maximum 6 persons and minimum 2 persons to run this programme.

Bamboo Rating Half Day Programme Description: A dawn to afternoon range hiking and rafting programme through some of the richest forest tracts of Periyar Tiger Reserve., a mosaic of habitats will be traversed before the party gets into rafts made of bamboos. This is a must thing to do in Thekkady. By rafting you will get a panoramic view of forest-clad hills. Animals like elephant, gaur and sambar are sighted keeping close to the edges of the lake. This programme works at two slots of 7.30am to 12.30pm and 9.30am to 2.30pm. You will be provided with packed food. The charges are 1500/- per person.

The two islets of elevated ground studded with bamboo thickets in Thekkady is the eco-lodge for experiential learning. This is a must things to do in Thekkady. Here a miniature habitat is being recreated for man and nature to co-exist in the already available milieu of grassy downs, sedges and bamboos and stream fringed with screw pine. Dwelling units made exclusively of natural materials like bamboo and grass and tents are slotted in the available space together with treetop huts to give the place an eco-friendly ambiance. Experiential learning and nature sensitization camps are conducted for discerning aspirants and the programme addresses different target groups, Lectures, discussions, audiovisual presentations, field visits etc. go with the programme.

Jungle  Camp is a tent mode staying facility in which you will be staying in the forest and on the bank of Periyar Lake. This is a must thing to do in Thekkady. Best time to visit the Periyar Tiger Reserve:

Best time to visit the Periyar Tiger Reserve is said to be from September to May.

The months of March and April constitute the driest part of the year, because of which the animals spend a lot of time near the lake in the Periyar Tiger Reserve. Animals may be seen from motorboats on the lake or from watchtowers set up in the Periyar Tiger Reserve. Even the tiger may be spotted approaching the lake in the Periyar Tiger Reserve.

The park is at its best greenery during the monsoon season covering June, July, and August. During this period and you can enjoy the showers of monsoon with the glimpse of the sanctuary.

How to Reach Periyar Tiger Reserve Thekkady, Kumily:

Periyar Tiger Reserve, Thekkady is about 4 km from Kumili in Idukki district, Kerala and is well connected by road from all the major towns of Kerala.

By Bus: Direct buses are available from Thiruvananthapuram, Cochin, Kottayam, Munnar to Kumily.  And from Kumily you can take a taxi/auto to reach the reception of Periyar Tiger Reserve

By Own Transport:

From Kottayam: Kottayam  -> Pampady -> Kanjirapally -> Mundakayam -> Kuttikanam -> Kumily -> Thekkady ( about 108 Kms)

From Kochi: Kochi -> Pala ->  Kanjirapally -> Mundakayam -> Kuttikanam -> Kumily -> Thekkady (about 153 Kms)

Note: Private vehicles are allowed till the information center and is not allowed inside the Sanctuary. You can either take a bicycle from there of free of cost and ride till Thekkady Boating site, which is about 2kms long or you can take a ride on the minibus, which is available from the Information Center to the Boating site. A minibus is available near the reservation counter as first come first serve manner to reach the boating site.
